Belize Joins Global Observance of United Nations’ 80th Anniversary

Today marks 80 years since the founding of the United Nations, an organization dedicated to peace, human rights, and global progress. Belize, joined the UN just days after gaining Independence, AND TODAY celebrated this milestone with special activities in the nation’s capital. Ljay Wade tells us more.

Ljay Wade, Correspondent: “On the 24th of October, 80 years ago, the UN was created.  Through its work in promoting peace, protecting human rights, and advancing social progress, including access to healthcare and education,  the UN has helped improve living standards and transform lives across the globe.  Belize officially became a member of the UN just four days after gaining independence.  And today, Belize joined the rest of the world in celebrating UN Day with an education fair at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters in Belmopan. Today, students from across Belmopan attended the UN80 education fair. The event celebrated 80 years of the United Nations under the theme, 80 years of unity and progress, reflecting on the past, building the future. Organized in partnership with the United Nations Belize office, the fair aim to educate and inspire young Belizeans about the UN’s global mission  and its impact on local development.  Today, we stopped by some of the booths.

Wonjun Bae, UNDP: “So UNDP has been supporting the Belize,  not only the government, but also the civil society, academia, and also various other bodies  that work for the socioeconomic development in the country.  And our work area  is not only limited to governance related things, but also we have a portfolio of nature, climate and energy,  which includes a climate change response and also electrical vehicles for a cleaner environment  and also digitization, governance and inclusive growth portfolio where we have data or statistics supporting project and also digitization of the government, judiciary and also various other bodies in the country.  So  we basically work on  a lot of things to improve the quality of lives of Belizean citizens.”

Denis Maldonado, Sustainable Development Unit: “So the United Nations created a sustainable development goal with the agenda 2030. In 2015, we’re trying to complete all of these goals by the year 2030. So my unit basically collects the information to report back on what Belize is doing for all of these 17 goals. Today’s team is Unity and Progress. We need to be united to show our progress and highlight where we are. The sustainable development goals are very comprehensive. They include both  the social aspect, the environmental aspects, and the economic aspect, and again, our institutions that are needed to collect all of this information and to just show where our programs are,  where our progress is, and where we need to place our efforts.  Today is great to see the students here today, teaching them what we do, highlighting the importance of creating that correlation of not just the environment, but of our people and the economy at the same time.
