Belize Places 7th in U23 Pan American Volleyball Championship

Team Belize has placed seventh in the Male Under-23 Pan American Volleyball Championships, hosted by the North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA). The team was in Guatemala for the competition and played a total of five games against the toughest teams in the region. Despite making major efforts, they only managed to secure one win. President of the Belize Volleyball Association, Allan Sharp, says that, despite the placement, the team and the country should be proud, as their performance shows that the level of volleyball is improving.

Allan Sharp, President, Belize Volleyball Association: “Belize can be very proud again. I mean we were in the group of debt with  USA, Dominican Republic, Mexico, and ourselves and we still ended up  coming in seventh out of eighth. In our final match we beat Suriname in a five-setter. That’s, for us, excellent. All these countries are way, way bigger than us in population and in size. And our guys pulled out a match and we played very, very close with the teams in the group of debt. Two of the teams in the group of debt, USA and DR ended up playing for gold and silver. So there you have it. We, you know, we were playing against the very, very best. Again, we’re very proud of the guys. The guys pulled it off another. This is our second continental win. The U-19 guys who went away a couple of years ago won the first continental match ever for Belize and this is our second one that’s that’s been won.”

The team should be arriving back in the country this afternoon.
