A $12.5 million deal was signed between the Kuwait fund and the Government of Belize for an 18-mile upgrade on the George Price Highway. The upgrade is set to see new service lanes, upgrades to existing bridges, and 16 bus stop lanes between the communities of La Democracia and the City of Belmopan. Financial Secretary Joseph Waight signed the loan agreement on behalf of the Government of Belize, as he’s currently the Head of Delegation to the 2025 World Bank/IMF Meetings being held in Washington, D.C. The meeting started on October 13 and will conclude on October 18th, 2025.
With the signing of this new loan, Belize expresses its appreciation to the Kuwait fund for the continued partnership and support towards Belize’s advancement in its infrastructural development. Since the 1990s, Belize has signed multiple loans, including for upgrades to the Thomas Vincent Ramos Highway (formerly Southern Highway), the Hummingbird Highway, and the Caracol Road.
