Belmopan is poised to expand its cultural footprint with strong support for the designation of the Riviera Archaeological Site as an official archaeological reserve. This significant development follows a high-profile tour of the ongoing excavations, highlighting the immense potential for cultural development, preservation, and public engagement in the nation’s capital. Yesterday, the Institute of Archaeology had the distinct honor of hosting key dignitaries, including the Minister of Culture, Francis Fonseca; NICH Administrator, Eluide Miller; Belmopan Area Representative and Minister of National Defense and Border Security, Oscar Mira; Mayor of Belmopan, Pablo Cawich; and the General Manager of RECONDEV, Genaro Barrera. Also in attendance were members of the NICH Board of Directors, the Belmopan City Council, and RECONDEV. The visit focused on the archaeological excavations currently underway at the Riviera Archaeological Site in West Belmopan. This groundbreaking research, led by Dr. Lisa Lucero and her team from the University of Illinois, marks the first formal archaeological exploration of the site, unearthing crucial insights into Belize’s ancient past. The establishment of the Riviera Archaeological Reserve would not only protect invaluable historical resources but also open new avenues for cultural tourism, drawing both local and international visitors to discover the ancient wonders within the capital city.
