Caribbean Shield spot up for grabs

THE JAMAICA Premier League (JPL) third-place playoff between cross-town rivals Waterhouse and Arnett Gardens at 3 p.m., at the National Stadium, today will take on added significance this year, with a place in the Concacaf Caribbean Shield at stake.

Qualification to the Caribbean Shield will give either team an opportunity to advance to the lucrative Concacaf Caribbean Cup, where teams are guaranteed US$160,000 just for participation.

“The Shield will be a centralised tournament that will be played in Curaçao, and two teams from that will go into the Caribbean Cup. So the Shield qualifies you for the Caribbean Cup, and the Caribbean Cup qualifies you for the Champions Cup,” Professional Football Jamaica Limited CEO Owen Hill explained.

Coach of Waterhouse Marcel Gayle said it has been tough trying get his team to recover from their semi-final exit but insists that they are aiming for a win nonetheless.

“It’s tough remotivating them for that game, but we will get back to the training ground and get our recovery. But we plan to win this very important game this weekend,” he said.

Last season, Arnett finished third, and coach Xavier Gilbert will be aiming to, at least, maintain that position in his first season in the league.
