Just before taking the stage at the More Than This concert, gospel legend CeCe Winans — born Priscilla Marie Winans Love — was officially honoured by the city of Kingston. In a special tribute, Mayor of Kingston Andrew Swaby presented the 17-time Grammy Award winner with the Key to the City of Kingston, while Robert Hill, CEO of the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC), read the official resolution honouring her for a lifetime of ministry and the global impact of her music.
“Her stirring music, her consistent message, boundless creativity, undiluted worship and transformational leadership has served as a shining example to be a positive change maker in the lives of many generations of people across the world,” Hill read.
He also listed several of Winans’ most beloved songs— Goodness of God, Mercy Said No, Never Lost, Alabaster Box, among others, prompting cheers after each title.
“Congratulations, and welcome to Kingston and Jamaica,” Hill concluded, drawing applause from the audience.
The concert, held on Emancipation Day at the East Lawn of King’s House in St Andrew, drew thousands of patrons for a day of praise and moving performances.
Clad in a white blouse, matching capris, a flowing multicoloured ankle-length cardigan, and a pink-and-white hat, Winans paused mid-performance to thank the mayor and the city for the honour. “Now I can come to Jamaica anytime,” she joked, drawing laughter and applause.
The Key to the City is the highest honour that can be bestowed by KSAMC.
The More Than This concert is part of Winans’ ongoing world tour.
Jamaican gospel star Chevelle Franklyn brought the curtain down on the night with a rousing set following Winans’ crowd-pleasing performance, which had the audience singing along word for word.
