The Belize City Council has officially launched its annual “Mayor for a Day” Essay Competition, inviting secondary school students to submit a 750-word essay for a chance to win cash prizes and spend a full day working alongside Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner. The initiative aims to empower young people by giving them a direct voice in local governance and an opportunity to experience municipal leadership firsthand.
This year’s theme is: “Together for Tomorrow: How Youth and City Leaders Can Build a More Caring and Inclusive Belize City.” The Council says the topic encourages young people to share practical ideas on community-building, social inclusion, and youth empowerment, key issues the municipality continues to champion. The competition is open to all registered students enrolled in any secondary institution within Belize City.
