Action on yesterday’s opening day of the Clarendon Elite schoolboy football competition at Glenmuir High School saw Denbigh High, Vere Technical, Munro College, and Glenmuir High advancing to today’s semifinals.

In the opening game of the competition, last year’s beaten Ben Francis Cup semifinalists, Denbigh High, got the better of Manchester High 1-0, thanks to a goal by Odaine Thompson.

It was Denbigh who took control of the game in the first half, creating several scoring opportunities but were let down by faulty shooting as the half ended scoreless.

In the second half, it was the Andre Edwards-coached Manchester High team that came out more positive and should have taken the lead. However, on two occasions centre forward Javantae Gordon, with the goalkeeper at his mercy, kicked wide of the target.

With the introduction of Rahjuan Cassanova in the half, Denbigh looked more purposeful and were rewarded in the 62nd minute of play. Cassanova, playing on the left wing, sent a cross to Thompson outside the 18-yard box, and from some 40 metres out, Thompson unleashed a screamer with his right foot, giving the goalkeeper no chance and sealing the win for Denbigh.

Denbigh will face Vere in the first semifinal today at 2 p.m. Vere got by Tivoli Comprehensive 5-4 on penalties. Both teams had played to a goalless draw at full time and were locked at 4-4 after the regular penalty shootout, before Vere came out on top in sudden death.

Home team Glenmuir will go up against Munro in today’s second semifinal at 4 p.m. The Andre Peart-coached Glenmuir team proved too strong for Belair, defeating them 5-0. Orel Miller with goals in the 39th and 66th minute, Dustin Cohen in the 23rd, Orane Watson in the 45th and Christopher Rodney in the 60th minute were the scorers for Glenmuir.

Munro received a bye to the semifinals after Central High failed to show up for their match against the St Elizabeth-based team.
