The Department of Cooperatives and Friendly Societies, DCFS, has recently relocated from property it occupied at 2 Musgrave Road in Kingston, adjacent to Guardian Life, which signalled it intends to develop the property at some point.
The DCFS is temporarily occupying office space in the New Kingston Business Centre, but expected to occupy a building at 10A Chelsea Avenue within months.
The agency had been given notice by landlord Guardian Life Limited to vacate the Musgrave Avenue premises for some time but was said to be awaiting the retrofitting of its new offices at Chelsea Avenue before relocating.
The decision was then taken to move to the New Kingston Business Centre pending the completion of the work at the Chelsea Avenue property, which once housed a section of the Ministry of Health.
Comments on the move were not immediately forthcoming. Head of the DCFS, Errol Gallimore, said the questions have been passed on to the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce for a response, in line with protocol.
The DCFS oversees the functions of more than 688 entities consisting of industrial and provident societies, co-operative societies, and societies registered under the Friendly Societies Act.
Guardian intends to develop the Musgrave property but the specifics of programme are unknown. The insurance company said in responses to the Financial Gleaner that it has owned the property for four years and that it is “part of a bigger development plan which we are unable to comment on at this time.”
The now vacant property is located between Guardian’s head office building and The Cambridge, a two-tower apartment complex development by Guardian Life.
The grounds were being used for parking by Guardian Life staff and customers on a recent visit to the site.
