Come-from-behind win for Waterhouse in U17 opener

Waterhouse FC had to come from behind to snatch the win in their opening game of Zone A in the Kingston and St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) U-17 football competition as they defeated Molynes United 2-1 at the Waterhouse Mini Stadium in Drewsland yesterday.

A brace from Duwayne Burgher was enough to seal the win for the home team while the solitary goal from Daniel Grant of Molynes United proved to be a consolation effort in the end.

Levi Monroe, head coach of Waterhouse, applauded his team’s mentality to pull off the win after conceding early in the first half.

“It’s a very good mentality from the team. A lot of them have shown that they’re very hungry for the win, they want to perform and they want to come out here and show the fans that they can play and they can compete,” Monroe said.

Molynes took the lead in the 16th minute. A corner floated over to the back post caught the Waterhouse defence unaware, which allowed Grant to head home from close range across the goalkeeper.

Molynes almost doubled their lead minutes later when a cross was sent dangerously across the face of the goal but Davion Andem arrived too late in the box to convert the opportunity.

Waterhouse found their footing in the latter stages of the first half and just before the half-hour mark a handled ball in the box gave Burgher his opening as he pulled his team level from the penalty spot.

Burgher secured his double in the second half, as he danced his way past the Molynes defence to fire home beneath the diving hands of the Molynes custodian.

Head coach of Molynes United Tate Robinson applauded the positives in his team’s play despite their defeat.

Robinson said the goal for Molynes United now is to ensure they can secure a win in their next games to boost their chances of progress to the knockout stage.

“It’s not a bad performance, it was just that we made some silly errors,” he said. “All we can do from here is to go back to the drawing board and work from there. I saw what I needed to see in them, so we know where to go for the second game and get those three points that we’ll need.”

Waterhouse’s next fixture will see them travelling to Pembroke Hall FC while Molynes United will face Cooreville Gardens FC.
