Defending champions Argentina are through to the semifinals of the Copa America after beating Ecuador 4-2 on penalties in Houston, Texas on Thursday night.
Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez saved two of Ecuador’s spot kicks while captain Lionel Messi was the only Argentine to miss from the spot.
The teams had earlier played out a 1-1 score line in regular time after Lisandro Martinez gave the champions the lead on 35 minutes only for Kevin Rodriquez to restore parity in the 91st minute.
Argentina’s opponent in the semifinals will be known later on Friday when Canada tackles Venezuela in Texas.
