There are concerns in South Africa Cricket after the country’s T20 World Cup squad failed to meet the transformation targets set by Cricket South Africa, CSA.
The 15 man provisional squad named for the World Cup has six players of colour, of which just one, pacer Kagiso Rabada is black.
The country’s current target requires the national squad to field, on average over the course of a season, six players of colour in an eleven of which at least two must be black African.
Former ICC president Ray Mali, who was also a CSA boss, says the sport is going backwards and it’s betraying those who’ve asked for unity.
Mali was particularly severe in his assessment of how the squad is selected and said the system of giving a team for one person to select is not going to work in a country like South Africa.
South Africa no longer has a committee of selectors, with the decision-making power in the hands of the two head coaches.
Both coaches make the final decision in consultation with the Director of Cricket.
Despite that, South Africa has missed their targets recently, particularly as not enough top black African players have been available.
South Africa is due in Jamaica next week for three T20 Internationals against West Indies in preparation for the ICC T20 World Cup.
