William “Danny” Mason is back in custody after appearing in the High Court today before Justice Nigel Pilgrim. His mitigation plea was postponed to June 30, due to pending documents, including a crucial Social Inquiry Report. Justice Pilgrim questioned Mason and his attorney, Peter Taylor, about the lack of a Social Inquiry Report and if character witnesses would be called. Taylor indicated that one character witness is expected. Mason, appearing in person with a police escort, voiced significant concerns about his treatment at the prison. He claimed difficulties communicating with his lawyer via Zoom, alleging the prison has obstructed these attempts. Mason also stated he’s been held in “darkness for years” in a cell with four locks and has been taken to “the hole” without charge, even as recently as yesterday. He alleges denial of basic rights, including access to his attorney. Frustrated, Mason stated, “I will say no more, because I want to speak with my lawyer so he can take necessary actions, because I am tired of the delay. It’s been 9 years.” Justice Pilgrim assured Mason he would write to the Kolbe Foundation CEO to ensure Mason gets more contact with his attorney, affirming it is his right. The Justice also advised Taylor to investigate “Visiting Justices” who investigate prison issues. Mason was found guilty on May 9, 2025, of two counts of kidnapping for the May 31, 2016, abduction of Lloyd and Rosie Friessen, but not guilty of blackmail. He was jointly charged with Ryan Rhaburn, who was acquitted of all charges.
