Education Ministry Wraps Up Consultations for New 2026–2030 Sector Plan

Education stakeholders countrywide today wrapped up two days of consultations on sectThe Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology is currently hosting a two-day Joint Sector Review for the preparation of the 2026-2030 Belize Education Sector Plan. During the two-day meeting, underway at the Grand Resort and Residences, the Ministry has revised key findings arising from the current plan and is in consultation to inform the new plan. Minister of Education Oscar Requena spoke of two concerns arising from the current sector plan.

Oscar Requena, Minister of Education: “Certainly a significant decrease in the dropout rate. So those are some of the successes. We are seeing that more females are actually in the school system and that’s great news. But certainly, there is concern for our boys. We certainly need to strengthen the level of support that we provide. There’s a lot we are doing, but we need to do more to ensure that our young men stay in school, that they complete school and that they become a part of the labor workforce and contribute to the development of Belize. So that’s very, very important. I believe that another area that came out where we are seeing that we need to strengthen is the whole area of TVET education. I’m happy to say that just recently the cabinet gave its approval for the national TVET policy. But we need to move beyond that now. We certainly need to develop the relevant legislation. We need to develop the national training agency among other areas. So that’s an area of concern that we have and certainly I can say to you that many of those areas that we have identified that need to be improved certainly we are going to address those in this new sector plan 2630.”

The two-day meeting ends today.
