Following the success of the electric buses in Belize City, the Ministry of Transportation says that commuters in northern Belize can expect E-buses coming their way later this year. The rollout of electric buses on the highways is an expansion of the e-bus pilot project, funded by the European Union. It also forms a part of the ministry’s push to modernize the transport sector and improve service delivery to commuters. Minister of Transportation Dr. Louis Zabaneh said that the highway e-buses will be operated by an existing bus company that is a part of the public-private partnership (PPP) for the national bus company.
Dr. Zabaneh says that more than 30 bus operators have signed on to the PPP, but that the ultimate beneficiaries of the arrangement will be commuters.
The ministry says that 180,000 passengers rode the e-bus in Belize City since the launch in 2024, and that data is still being gathered to help inform decisions on expansions going forward.
