“Let’s not waste the crisis.” That’s the reaction from chairperson of the Trade Facilitation Task Force, Patricia Francis, to the sweeping imposition of tariffs by US President Donald Trump.
She believes it presents an opportunity for Jamaica to diversify its trade regime.
Tauna Thomas reports.
Economists have warned the tariffs could trigger a global trade war and significant inflation.
Jamaica will likely feel the effects of the move with over 60 per cent of the country’s exports going to the US. Several businesses also ship items that pass through the US to get to Jamaica.
Ms. Francis says the US’s new tariff regime means Jamaicans may have to adjust how it sources products from overseas.
According to the Trade Facilitation Task Force chairperson, there are promising supply chain avenues within South America.
She says there is also an opportunity for regional governments to further harmonise trade facilitation within the Caribbean.
