Family Unable to Bury Shamar Faber After KHMH Lists Wrong Cause of Death on Certificate

The Faber family still has not been able to bury Shamar Faber because the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital had the wrong cause of death on his death certificate. Shamar had been battling complications from a gunshot wound since March 9 but sadly passed away on October 14. Shamar’s aunt, Shawnette Tillet, told Love News she is totally frustrated given the bureaucratic setbacks she experienced at the hospital.

SHAMAR BURIAL 1

Shawnette Tillet, Relative: “We lost um two of our relatives in just  a week time.  So you can imagine the frustration that my family and I are facing.  The roadblock happened  when the hospital called us to get back a death certificate for a death that we already registered. The hospital did not follow protocol on their process.  What they were supposed to do um as Shamar died was contact  the officer to let them know Shamar has passed away  and so that they can issue an autopsy and get the correct cause of death. What they did was offer us a cause of death already.  So we went right ahead that same day and registered the death because we had a deadline to bury him and his mom together, which is this Sunday. Fast forward to yesterday. Now, they’re trying to have us return that death certificate and let us know  that it was  a wrong cause of death.  Now, how can I tell a doctor how to do their jobs?  You understand? How can I tell a doctor, aren’t you supposed to call the police and autopsy needs to be done?  That is something that you guys are familiar with. That is something that you should know  because you guys do it on a daily.”

An exhausted Tillet said the manner in which the KHMH handles families is unacceptable.

Shawnette Tillet, Relative: “Yesterday they denied my funeral home guy  access to the body, the police.  Because as per um police law, an autopsy has to be done when it’s an ongoing investigation, right? And this is  still an ongoing investigation.  We are not trying to go against the police. We’re just saying that it is unfair to us because if that was told to us from the Tuesday when he died,  then we would have planned our funeral around that time. We would have done things differently, you understand.  Even if we weren’t able to get the autopsy done today or yesterday, we would have planned the funeral in accordance to  what the police process was. That is where the issue lies. The hospital failed to do their jobs.  They tried to go above our heads to try to contact someone with vital statistics to get back that certificate to cover it up. Because we were delayed, everything has to be crunch time now. We have to be doing things that we should have done last week. I just say shame on them. Because this has been happening to not only my family, a lot of families have experienced,  if not similar, other things  when it comes to hospital.  And they are not being held accountable for their actions.”

The Funeral for both mother and son, Shaniele and Shamar, will be held on Sunday, October 19, 11:00 am at the Mount Zion Seventh Day Adventist Church in Belize City. It can be recalled that Shaniele Faber was brutally murdered and found in a blue garbage drum at the corner of Amandala Drive and Cemetery Road, just one week before the death of her son.
