MAHOGANY AND MAMMA MIA locked horns for five and a half furlongs, allowing 5-1 chance FURTHER AND BEYOND to pounce on a collapsing pace with title-chasing Raddesh Roman in yesterday’s Seeking My Dream Trophy.
Outsped behind head-turning splits of 23.0, 45.4 and 58.2 for the first five furlongs, FURTHER AND BEYOND closed late in mid-track to wear down a tiring MAHOGANY, who was forced to go after MAMMA MIA down the backstretch.
Carrying topweight 126lb, seven-year-old MAHOGANY was dragged off his bridle by speedy MAMMA MIA, who tried to steal a march on the six-horse field.
Ensuring MAMMA MIA was kept honest on the lead, Reyan Lewis urged MAHOGANY to stalk the four-year-old and kicked clear off the home turn with the race seemingly at his mercy.
However, a six-furlong split of 1:11.1 started taking toll inside the final furlong. Though having MAMMA MIA beaten, MAHOGANY started running on the spot while FURTHER AND BEYOND closed steadily, getting his head in front shades from the wire to win by a length in 1:33.2.
Roman, who had earlier won the third aboard favourite MPRS LINKS, moved to 45 winners, seven behind jockeys’ standings leader Tevin Foster on 52.
Foster opened the nine-race card aboard PRINCESS FIANIE before being denied a second winner astride 11-1 outsider ANCHORMAN, whose number was taken down for interference in the fifth at five furlongs straight.
ANCHORMAN’S disqualification gifted Jerome Innis with a two-timer, second-past-the-post POWER OF FAITH awarded the event, which he followed up with victory aboard EL AFORTUNADO out the straight in the eighth.
Racing continues this afternoon with another nine-race programme.
