PRESIDENT of the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA), Garth Gayle, is excited about the participation of the country’s young athletes at the fifth staging of the two-day NACAC Under-13 and Under-15 Championships. The meet gets under way today at the Managua Olympic Stadium in Nicaragua.
“Building at the younger level is crucial. These are important investments in our young people and in track and field as a whole,” said Gayle, as eight athletes from Jamaica are down to compete.
The two-day championships is a multi-event competition with the under-13 athletes competing in the pentathlon (five events) while the under-15s will do so in the heptathlon (seven events). Two boys and two girls will represent the country in both categories, with a total of 139 athletes from 22 countries taking part.
The female athletes representing Jamaica in the under-13 category are Jenoi Daley of St Patrick’s Primary and Doneila Speid of Lyssons Primary. The male representatives are Davere Walker of Lyssons Primary and Ricardo Granville of Naggo Head Primary.
Edwin Allen’s pair of Daneila and Dashanelle Clarke will be the female representatives in the under-15 category, while Kingston College’s duo of Dequan Dawkins and Nahjier Francis will represent the males.
Former Morant Bay High athlete, Wilbert Walker, is the head coach of the team. He will be assisted by Mario Haughton of the JAAA and Grace Bourah, head track and field coach of Our Lady of the Angels Preparatory.
Under-13 athletes will be in action first when the morning session gets under way at 7:30 Jamaica time. The opening event will see both males and females contesting the 60 metres, followed 30 minutes later by the under-15 girls’ 80m and the under-13 girls’ high jump. The 80m for under-15 males, long jump for under-15 females, and shot put for under-15 males will close out the morning session.
