The National Stadium will have a seating capacity of 37,500 and will be 90 per cent covered when the redevelopment work is completed in 2027-28.
This was revealed at a press conference at the sports ministry on Wednesday where the media was given an update on how the project is proceeding.
Work is set to start next year and last for three years, during which time the facility will remain partially open for special events to include the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships.
The new stadium will also accommodate 50,000 patrons for events such as concerts and will have all the trappings of a modern facility.
It will be outfitted with elevators, 30 new state of the art VIP boxes, a fan boulevard and fan zones. The stadium will also have a nine lane track to make it World Athletics compliant.
There’ll also be a built in mixed zone and a 300 per cent increase in parking. There’ll be a new tier parking facility across from the existing stadium parking lot.
Jonathan Seebacher, a principal at Ryder Architecture, says the stadium will be comparable to the best in the world.
He also explained the rationale behind a 90 per cent covered stadium as opposed to a fully covered one.
