The Government of Guyana says it is closely monitoring developments in Venezuela following the capture of President Nicolás Maduro by the United States during military operations on January 3.

In a statement issued Sunday, President Dr. Irfaan Ali emphasized the importance of stability, respect for the rule of law, and a democratic transition in Venezuela, noting that these principles are critical not only for Venezuela’s future but for the wider Americas.
Guyana, the president said, supports efforts that “uphold democratic norms and ensure that the region remains a Zone of Peace.”
Ali also welcomed the role of the United States in the unfolding situation, saying Guyana “welcomes the leadership of the President of the United States in reaffirming shared commitments to freedom, democracy, and regional security.”
He added that Guyana looks forward to engagement moving forward, noting, “We look forward to constructive engagement in Venezuela’s next chapter in the interest of all Venezuelans.”
On Saturday, hours after the U.S. strikes on Venezuela, Guyana said it had activated its security plan to ensure the safety and security of its citizens.
