Jamaican international Leon Bailey says he was on the verge of leaving Aston Villa before current coach Unai Emery came in and saved his career at Villa Park.
Bailey was brought to Aston Villa by Dean Smith from German outfit Bayer Leverkusen in the 2021/22 season.
Shortly after Smith was sacked and Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard was brought in as his replacement.
Bailey struggled during Gerrard’s 11 months in charge, featuring just 12 times , before then starting eight of 11 games which the former Rangers boss managed last term.
Bailey said he felt as if he was not wanted at the club under Gerrard’s leadership. Bailey says he’d lost his confidence and was uncomfortable to a point where he contemplated leaving.
Bailey says he didn’t have a relationship with Gerrard, adding that he’s at his best when he has the trust of his manager.
Emery has turned around the club and they are now on the verge of qualifying for the European Champions League. Villa are now only one point away from securing UCL qualification after rallying to draw 3-3 with Liverpool at Villa Park on Monday.

Bailey says Emery has given him his confidence back and has described the Spaniard is the best coach he’s ever worked with.
He says what Emery has created is truly remarkable and he is a really good example of a manager to have and the players really like him.
