For the first time in recorded history, the Jamaican dollar has crossed the $160 mark in trading against the benchmark US dollar.
On Monday, the dollar opened trading selling for an average $160.18 against the US currency.
The public data available from the Bank of Jamaica goes back to December 1, 2000, when the Jamaica dollar was trading for $45.36 against the US dollar.
When the Jamaican dollar was pegged to the US dollar in 1973, it was stronger than its counterpart in the north, trading at J$0.90 to US$1.
By the beginning of the 1990s, the exchange rate increased to J$7.24 to US$1. In 1992, the dollar began to float against its US counterpart, starting the climb to where it is today.
Meanwhile, the Jamaican dollar opened trading selling for an average $115.40 against the Canadian.
And finally, the Jamaica opened trading selling for an average $212.29 against the British pound.
