Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport Olivia Grange, has expressed sorrow at having to say farewell to yet another recording artiste, this time, Leroy Gibbons. He was 74.

Grange noted that Leroy Gibbons, who died on Tuesday, June 17, “made a tremendous impact on the music ... [and his] contributions to the industry are undeniable”.

“I am glad that I got the opportunity to see him at Rebel Salute 2025 where gave an electrifying performance, captivating his audience,” Minister Grange said in her tribute.

She reminisced that it was Gregory Park, Portmore, that “gave us Leroy Gibbons, who caught our attention in the mid-1980s after starting out as a solo singer”.

“[He] moved on to become the lead singer of a gospel group, the Gospel Proclaimers. Indeed, his last major performance in Jamaica was at the gospel event, Arise 2025. Though covers, his Magic Moment, Cupid and Stir It Up are considered classics. He blended genres, creating a distinctive sound that resonated with diverse audiences and will always be inspiring,” the entertainment minister recalled.

Commending his unique voice and style which “have left a lasting impact on fans worldwide”, Grange vowed to continue to support Gibbons’ family during this difficult time.

“I express my deepest sympathy to them, to his friends and associates to the music fraternity. Rest in peace, Leroy Gibbons; your music found a permanent place in our hearts and long will we remember you.”
