Minister Hosein, Japanese Ambassador discuss development cooperation

2 weeks ago 3

Minister of Legal Affairs and Minister in the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries, Saddam Hosein, today met with Ambassador of Japan, Dr Akima Umezawa during an introductory courtesy call aimed at strengthening ties between the two nations.

Talks centred on areas of mutual interest and potential avenues for collaboration, with Ambassador Umezawa affirming Japan’s readiness to deepen engagement with Trinidad and Tobago. A key focus of the discussions was the role of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in facilitating future cooperation.

JICA, a key implementing agency of Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA), provides technical expertise, concessionary loans, and grant aid to support socioeconomic development worldwide. Under the proposed partnership, JICA could deliver specialised training and developmental programmes for local technocrats across multiple sectors.

Officials described the meeting as a positive step toward enhanced bilateral relations and joint initiatives in critical developmental areas.

The meeting, held at the Ministry of Legal Affairs in Port of Spain, was also attended by Koki Yamamoto, Political Advisor to the Ambassador, and Abigail Bynoe, Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry.
