WESTERN BUREAU:

Twenty-five-year-old social worker Dalian Watson was the toast of Saturday night’s staging of the 2025 Miss Trelawny Festival Queen contest, as she not only walked away with the coveted crown but also captured four of the sectional prizes, outshining the other five contenders.

The event, held at the Artisan Village in Falmouth, attracted a fair-sized crowd, as each contestant arrived with their own cheering party, keeping the atmosphere lively throughout

“I will be going to the national finals full of confidence as I intend to give it my best effort,” said Watson, beaming with pride at her success. “If I don’t win in Kingston, it won’t be because I did not give my best. However, regardless of the result, I will be satisfied.”

Tyra Bucknor, who wore the sash Miss Smart Auto, took the first runner-up slot behind Watson, who wore the sash of Miss Modern Vision Investment Plus Limited. Celena Angus, who wore the sash Miss Western STEM Academy, was the second runner-up.

Watson also received sectional prizes for Best Performance, Most Culturally Aware, Most Active on Social Media, and Most Active in the Community.

Initially, all the contestants received generous applause, and it appeared that choosing a winner would be difficult. However, once Watson did her culture piece, entitled ‘Miss Dippi’, the tide swung in her favour. Depicting the story of the trials and tribulations of a deportee sent back to Jamaica from the United States, she nailed the performance.

Watson, cheered on by her parents, has big plans for her reign as Miss Trelawny Festival Queen, as she looks forward to making an indelible mark.

“My project [involves a] feeding project for the homeless in the parish,” said Watson. “I see that as a very important project so I will be working with a group and parish organisations to achieve the success my project needs.”

Watson is the third person to be crowned parish queen in western Jamaica since the start of this year’s Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) competitions.

Of the contests already concluded in western Jamaica, attorney Jhenelle Small was crowned Miss Westmoreland Festival Queen, and educator Ashley-Nicole Lawrence was named Miss Hanover Festival Queen.
