AS PART of the World Athletics Awards 2025, World Athletics yesterday confirm the nominees for Women’s Out of Stadium Athlete of the Year and Men’s Out of Stadium Athlete of the Year.
There are five nominees for each of the two categories, and a vote will take place to identify the two finalists for each.
The nominations reflect some of the standout performances achieved during another memorable year for the sport, which peaked with the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25.
Nominees for 2025 Women’s Out of Stadium Athlete of the Year are Tigst Assefa of Ethiopia; Sifan Hassan, Netherlands; Peres Jepchirchir, Kenya; Agnes Ngetich, Kenya; and Maria Perez, Spain.
Assefa earned her nod for mining the world marathon silver medal and winning the London Marathon. She is also the world leader with a women-only world record.
Hassan, this year, won the Sydney Marathon and was third at the London Marathon.
Jepchirchir is the world marathon champion, winning her fifth global title, while her countrywoman, Ngetich, earned the world 10k record (women-only) this year, and is the half-marathon world leader with the third-fastest performance of all time.
Perez is a double world champion in the 20k and 35k race walk and has gone unbeaten in 2025.
Nominees for 2025 Men’s Out of Stadium Athlete of the Year are
Caio Bonfim, Brazil; Evan Dunfee, Canada; Yomif Kejelcha, Ethiopia; Sabastian Sawe, Kenya; and Alphonce Simbu, Tanzania.
Bonfim was the world 20k race walk champion and was second in world 35k race walk.
Dunfee beat Bonfim to the world 35k race walk title with a championship record and broke the area 20k race walk record
Kejelcha was the world 5k leader with the sixth-fastest performance in history, and was the world 10k leader with the second-fastest performance in history.
Sawe won the London and Berlin marathons and had the top two performances of 2025.
Simbu was this year’s world marathon champion and the Boston Marathon runner-up.
The vote to determine the Out of Stadium Athlete of the Year finalists is now open on World Athletics social media platforms – on Facebook, Instagram and X. Voting closes on November 2 and the winners will be announced at the World Athletics Awards on November 30.
The nominees for the Track Athlete of the Year awards were announced on October 13 and the nominees for the Field Athlete of the Year awards were announced on October 20.
The overall women’s and men’s World Athlete of the Year award winners will be selected from among the track, field and out of stadium category winners.
