Parking Meter Project Faces New Hurdles, Council Eyes Revenue Options

The mayor also gave us an update on the Parking meter Project that has faced backlash from the public back in 2023. Business owners claimed that the meters were deterring customers from supporting them and were calling on the council to remove them. Since then, the meters have seen a purpose re-evaluation, and Mayor Bernard Wagner says that they are still facing a similar issue. But the council will find a way to utilize them as a revenue generating asset.

Bernard Wagner, Mayor of Belize City: “The parking meters again.  I could see maybe the  Digi side may have been um a bit behind.  But we are looking at other ways how we can spread  this sort of mechanism. The council has to find and continues to find revenue generating assets.  And that is why we have  embarked on the e-buses, have embarked on the e-taxis,  we have embarked on the parking meters, we have embarked on the smart parking facilities. All of those are new  revenue streams.”
