Pathlight Belize is visiting several districts this week, hosting summer training workshops for teachers. The Phonics Essentials Workshop was held in Orange Walk on Monday and Tuesday, and the second round of the two-day session kicked off in Belize City today. Lower division teachers, those teaching Infant 1 to Standard 1 classes, were engaged in lessons aimed at improving letter and sound recognition for their students. Renee Mullikin, Volunteer Teacher Trainer with Pathlight International, has been coming to Belize for 13 years as part of the program to help build teacher capacity. Today, she spoke on how these lessons are crafted to be easy for teachers and fun for students.
And while the training is aimed primarily at the lower division, it is well known that many students at all levels need additional support with reading. Felicia McCullock, Upper Division Teacher, All Saints Primary School, says she asked to be a part of the Belize City cohort, so she can better help students in need.
The next round of the Phonics Essentials Workshop will be held in Belmopan on July 28 and 29. Pathlight Belize will also be hosting Special Education, Administrative Leadership, and High School teacher trainings in August./
