CEO OF Professional Football Jamaica Limited (PFJL) Owen Hill has praised the quality shown by the local-based players in the Reggae Boyz squad after their opening Group E Concacaf World Cup qualifying victory over the Dominican Republic yesterday.
Jamaica secured all three points in their opening World Cup qualifier when they clipped the Dominican Republic 1-0 at the National Stadium through a lone strike from Shamar Nicholson.
Hill, who was in attendance, praised the team’s performance.
“I think it was very, very good. Based on all the factors at play, I think the Boyz came out and showed that they are top quality, and it’s a nice momentum going into the World Cup. I think this is a step in the right direction for the team.”
Hill was especially pleased with the number of players who currentlyply or have at one time plied their trade in the Wray and Nephew-sponsored Jamaica Premier League (JPL).
According to Hill, it spoke volumes about the growth of the JPL that several players from the local league were able to earn their spot in a competitive squad like Jamaica.
He said the presence of the local-based players is proof that there is a route for any player in the JPL to stake their claim for a spot in the national programme.
“It’s extremely important to see these players,” he said.
“Again, it speaks to the quality that exists within the JPL. If you look into the squad now, you had no fewer than six players, I counted seven, coming right out of the JPL, having a fantastic season and getting called up.
“It is something for every single JPL player to look forward to because again, you’ll never know who is watching the games, and the guys who are out there have earned their spot and really stepped up.”
Hill believes the presence of local players could prove a massive boost for Jamaica as it would encourage fans of the JPL to show their support with increased turn out for national games.
Hill said crowd favourites like Renaldo Cephas, Kaheim Dixon, Richard King, and Fabian Reid, players who have spent time in the JPL, can cause an improvement in crowd support.
“Like I said, if it were a game that started at 6:30 p.m., then I’m certain it would be crazy in terms of the number of people who would turn out here. I think we’re getting in that zone for the turnout, and these players look like they’re ready and getting into it,” he said.
“I’m happy that I’m here as this is the start of many more for Jamaica.”
