People’s National Party (PNP) Leader Wil Maheia is calling on the Government of Belize to urgently address the increasing level of Guatemalan incursions into the Chiquibul National Park. Successive reports from Friends For Conservation and Development (FCD) have shown that Belize is losing thousands of acres of forest cover to illegal cattle pastures, milpa farms, and, on occasion, authorities have found marijuana plantations. Maheia chided the government this week for celebrating Climate Week and raising awareness about actions being taken to combat climate change, while not properly addressing the destruction of natural resources.
We note that in March 2024, FCD rangers found an illegal road built in the Chiquibul, which was reportedly constructed by Guatemalans./
