Police conclude investigation into the death of 16-month-old Makayla Ramirez

The babysitter of 16-month-old Makayla Ramirez will not be criminally charged as per the Police’s investigation.  The child died some fifteen days ago in Georgetown Village in the Stann Creek District whilst in the care of the sitter, 18-year-old, Nikia Cancio.  Following the collection of evidence and the results of the postmortem, investigators have concluded that Cancio will not face any charges.  Stann Creek Correspondent, Rafael Roberts, spoke with the child’s mother, Laruni Castillo, and filed the following report.

Raphael Roberts, South Correspondent: On July  23rd, 2025, Baby Makayla Ramirez, one-year-old of Georgetown Village, was found unresponsive lying next to her sitter in a pool of her own vomit. Her mother, Laruni Castillo, in shock, quickly sought medical attention in hopes of keeping her baby alive. Unfortunately, at four minutes after 6 p.m., Baby Makayla was pronounced dead at the Independence Polyclinic. Today, Love News spoke with Laruni Castillo who told us about how she now feels after receiving the medical death certificate.

Laruni Castillo, Mother of Deceased: “After we got the death certificate me and my boy we sat down and we talked and satisfied with what they gave us, We really appreciate then and like what I said we can’t blame because she didn’t have any abuse, no foul play, no nothing well we just put it in God’s hands and we just let him do his work.”

Raphael Roberts, South Correspondent: An autopsy was done on Monday, July 28, 2025, where it was revealed that baby Michaela Ramirez’s cause of death is ruled as an accident due to asphyxia by way of bronchoaspiration of stomach content.

According to Police. the child was fed rice and chocolate milk before naptime.  Two hours later, the child was found on the bed, unresponsive.  Love News understands that the mother has temporarily relocated from her home during her time of mourning./
