Police Department Awards Scholarships to Ten Belize City Students

Ten students from Belize City are getting help with their education expenses through a scholarship initiative by the Belize Police Department. The Community-Oriented Policing Unit held its third annual scholarship distribution today at the Queen Street Police Station. Under the program, Community Police Officers work with schools to identify students who are in need of financial support. National Commander of Community Policing, Assistant Commissioner of Police Howell Gillett, says that supporting education is one of the most effective ways that police can prevent crime.

We spoke with parents about how the scholarships have helped them as well as one of the recipients.

Gillett has vowed that the scholarship program is properly established to ensure its continuity even after he retires from the department.
