Rutherford Fires WI to T20 World Cup Super 8s

Two-time champions the West Indies are through to the Super 8’s at the ICC T20 World Cup after beating New Zealand by 13 runs at the Brian Lara Academy in Tobago on Wednesday night.

The West Indies needed a superb batting display from Sherfane Rutherford to stage a remarkable batting comeback. Rutherford cracked 68 off 39 balls as the West Indies posted 149 for 9 after being 30 for 5 at one stage.

Nicholas Pooran was the next best scorer with 17 and Akiel Hossein 15.

Trent Boult bagged 3 for 16 while Tim Southee and Lucky Ferguson claimed two each.

In reply, the Kiwis could only manage 136 for 9 with Glenn Phillips, 40, leading the way against Alzarri Joseph, 4 for 19, and Gudakesh Motie, 3 for 25.

The West Indies will close out the group stage against Afghanistan on Monday in St. Lucia.
