LONDON, England (CMC):
JAMAICA’S OBLIQUE Seville shows he is returning to full fitness with a supreme display at the London Diamond League yesterday.
Seville has had question marks over his season despite a fast 9.83 seconds at the National Trials in Kingston, Jamaica, last month.
The Racers Track Club finished second behind a supreme performance from national champion Kishane Thompson (10.75), but had spent minutes on the ground being massaged just before the race and showed a slight limp after it.
Yesterday though, Seville exploded from the blocks and never relented, leaving Olympic Champion Noah Lyles (10.00) well behind as he put his hand to his ear on the way to a 9.86-second clocking.
Britain’s Zharnel Hughes, 10.02, and Jamaica’s Ackeem Blake, 10.08, rounded out the top four.
There was also a top performance from St Lucian sprint sensation Julien Alfred in the women’s 200m, scorching the track in a world-leading 21.71 seconds, a personal best and a new meet record.
The St Lucian star shattered the previous mark of 21.82 set by American Gabby Thomas and left Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith, 22.25, and Amy Hunt, 22.31, trailing in her wake.
While Alfred and Seville soared, other regional athletes faced tougher challenges.
In the women’s 400-metre hurdles, Jamaica’s Andrenette Knight clocked 57.39 seconds for third, while teammate Janieve Russell, 1:00.55, finished eighth as Dutch star Femke Bol dominated in 52.10.
In the women’s 800m, St Vincent’s Shafiqua Maloney clocked 1:58.47 for fifth, while Jamaica’s Natoya Goule-Toppin struggled to eighth in 1:59.27. Britain’s Georgia Hunter Bell won in a time of 1:56.74.
Wayne Pinnock edged Olympic champion Miltiadis Tentoglou with a leap of 8.20 metres. Tentoglou leapt 8.19 to get the better of Jamaica’s Carey McLeod, 8.10.
Olympic champion Roje Stona, rumoured to be switching allegiance to Türkiye, placed sixth with a throw of 64.71 metres in the men’s discus, as Lithuania’s Mykolas Alekna set a meet record following his throw of 71.70.
