Two months after making his Reggae Boy debut at the 2025 Unity Cup, Malik Mothersille has completed a record-signing move to English Football League (EFL) League One club Stockport County for an undisclosed fee.
Though the official transfer fee has not been announced, Stockport County confirmed it eclipsed their previous transfer record of £800,000 they had paid for Ian Moore in 1998.
The Jamaican international is making the switch from fellow League One club Peterborough where he enjoyed a breakthrough season, scoring 16 goals and tallying 10 assist in 57 appearances.
Simon Wilson, Stockport County’s CEO, welcomed the signing as he believes Mothersille will bring a new dimension to the team’s attack.
“We are delighted to welcome Malik to the club, as he joins us for the next phase of our journey,” Wilson said.
“He is rightly seen as one of the most exciting young players in the EFL, and we believe we are getting him at exactly the right time for him to become the prolific player we know he can be.”
Wilson explained the signing is major achievement for the club as they were competing against several other clubs who had also wanted to sign the player.
“The clubs competing for his signing show the company that County is starting to keep, and with the backing and support of many people, we’ve managed to get the deal done. We’re very excited that Malik will now be a County player.”
Speaking in his first interview with the club, Mothersille explained the reason behind his decision to make the switch was based on the club’s ambition for the future.
Stockport County had finished third in the league’s standings, just missing out on automation promotion to the EFL Championship.
They were also narrowly defeated 4-1 on penalties in the semi-finals of the promotion playoffs by Leyton Orient after 3-3 draw on aggregate.
Mothersille believes the club is on the cusp of a great season and hopes he can play a role in the upcoming seasons.
FUTURE
“I’m very excited to join a team that is on the up and has got so much to offer in the future. I’m just excited to get going,” he said.
“When I sat down with some of the staff and the gaffer and spoke with them and really thought about it, I really felt like this move was perfect for me.
He continued, “Envisioning myself in the team, I’m confident that we can do something special this year.”
HIGH PRAISES
Mothersille already has the approval of his new manager, Dave Challinor, who praised the player’s ability and believes his arrival is a major investment in the future of the club.
“He was a player that was on our list, but we thought that not reaching the Championship last season may have scuppered any hopes we had. This represents a big investment from the club into what we feel is one of the brightest prospects in the EFL,” the manager said.
“At 21, he has huge potential and we are delighted that he’s chosen us to be the next step in his career. It’s important we get him integrated as quickly as possible and amongst the group, to give him the best chance to show the best version of himself from day one.”
Mothersille had risen through the youth ranks of Premier League club Chelsea before leaving on a permanent transfer in 2023 to Peterborough United.
He had earned his first call-up to the Reggae Boyz programme this year, making his debut in the Unity Cup final against Nigeria as a second-half substitute.
