Trinidad and Tobago national Shurlan Guppy has been extradited to the United States to face federal drug trafficking charges following a five-year investigation by the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

Guppy was flown out of Trinidad and Tobago on August 5, 2025, under escort from US Marshals and DEA agents. He is expected to appear in court in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

The investigation began in 2019, and Guppy was arrested on September 26, 2023, at a house in Goodwood Park, Port of Spain. A magistrate approved his extradition in July 2024, and the Court of Appeal later dismissed his legal challenge in March 2025.

His extradition was the result of coordinated efforts between US and local law enforcement, including the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, Transnational Organized Crime Unit, Customs and Immigration Division, the Central Authority in the Office of the Attorney General, and US agencies such as the Department of Justice and Diplomatic Security Service.

US Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Dr Jenifer Neidhart de Ortiz called it “indicative of the strong law enforcement relationships and close cooperation between the United States and Trinidad and Tobago.”

DEA Caribbean Division Special Agent in Charge Michael A. Miranda added, “The successful extradition of Shurlan Guppy is a powerful testament to the strength of international cooperation… Together, we sent a clear message that transnational criminal organizations will be pursued relentlessly, no matter where they hide.”
